gaze
Textile prints and audio piece, 2016

gaze brings together two screenshots from two different videos from the year 2000. One shows a mother of a prisoner in hungerstrike. The image is from one day before the bloody State operation that killed over 30 prisoners. The other screenshot shows a hungerstriker 10 days before her death. Both are caught for a moment when they are gazing at the camera. 2000 was the year where there were hunger strikes going on in several prisons in Turkey, against the isolation-type prison system that the state wanted to introduce for political prisoners. On 19 December 2000, the State intervened in several prisons to break the resistance. This bloody military operation was ironically called ‘Back to Life’.
