grain asks the questions around the ethics of political imagery. How does a political movement look at its own traumas and deaths, and how the violence and obscenity is redefined through these images.
2000 was the year where there were hunger strikes going on in several prisons in Turkey, against the isolation-type prison system that the state wanted to introduce for political prisoners. On 19 December 2000, the State intervened in several prisons to break the resistance. This bloody military operation was ironically called ‘Back to Life’. Many prisoners were part of a revolutionary underground group DHKP-C, which later issued several visual materials showing the violence its members were subjected to. The images of this violence and the violence of these images are central issues in grain.
