absences

absences
Single Channel Video, 2010

(Exhibited in ‘Accidental Harmony’ Exhibition, Utrecht, 2010)

Four absences; an intruder, a prophet, and an object of addiction. While being absent they take each others’ role. The meaning of these elements become fluid and interchangable with eachother.

In Turkey, it is forbidden to show tobacco and tobacco products in television. One way of ‘getting rid of’ the cigarettes and tobacco in old movies is to use the mosaic effects on them, where the picture becomes blurred. But the intriguing thing is that when you censor it in that way, the absent mosaic’d object turnes into a dominantly present subject.
