Anti-Stockholm

anti-stockholm

The first of a series on anti-stockholm syndrome; Love in the hearths of the torturer towards the tortured ones. First episode is on Ayhan Carkin. He was an special intelligence police officer, one of the protagonists in the 90’s thrilling atmosphere in Turkey,  where  disappearing and killings of left and ethnical minority political figures was a daily matter.

The image of the crying kid has a cult status in Turkey just like in many other geographies… the guilt feeling, an open wound, the symbol of one’s victimization in a very perverse way.. I believe by bringing these two narratives and imagery the video reflects on the specific cases as larger societal matters and public consciousness. We can expand this to other cases in Turkey, clearly worded by Rakel Dink as “darkness that creates a murderer from a baby”. I’m interested in the complicated (or maybe simple) narratives in the mind of the evil.
Nurdan Gurbilek’s book ‘Kotu Cocuk Turk’ is a big personal inspiration for this video.

The text comes from many interviews, mainly the one from 2002 by Ayse Arman: http://www.hurriyet.com.tr/devlet-bizi-dagdan-indirmeyecekti-38348811
